Separated from North Tyneside by the river Tyne, the town has a heritage of coal mining and ship building. It is also famous for being the birth place of Catherine Cookson.

The town has a stunning white beach and a fantastic green belt known as the Leas which skirts the cliffs all the way to Sunderland taking in Marsden Beach and Souter Light House.
